The Paris 2024 Olympic orgainzers have proposed breakdancing as a new sport for the summer games.
They have also suggested three other sports: skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing.
Breakdancing made its debut in last year’s Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but they have not developed a full adult program.
President of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, Tony Estanguet, called it “a major step forward in our ambition to organize unique Olympic Games” in a press conference on Thursday.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will have until December 2020 to make the final decision.
Skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing will appear in the 2020 summer games in Tokyo.
Sports squash, snooker and chess, however, will not move forward in the proposal process.
The World Squash Federation and Professional Squash Association made a joint statement Thursday following the news.
Both said they have met the announcement of the four proposed sports “with great disappointment.”
They added, “We truly believe squash could seamlessly integrate into the Olympic programme with minimal costs and an optimised pool of participants.”
