Tucson Woman is Award-Winning Competitive Eater

When you have summer’s off, you go big. Michelle “Cardboard Shell” Lesco is a high school math and physics teacher in Tucson, Ariz., and she’s a nationally ranked competitive eater.

She’s fresh off a second place victory at the annual Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog eating contest that happens at Coney Island every Fourth of July.

I met Michelle at Brat Haus in Scottsdale to learn what it takes to be a competitive eater.

Adam: How many hot dogs did you eat this Nathan’s contest on the fourth of July.
Michelle: This Fourth of July? Only 28.
Adam: Only 28?
Michelle: Yeah, it was a bummer. I was shooting for 38.
Adam: What’s the proper technique to eat a hot dog fast.
Michelle: Some people do the two dog method where they take the two dogs and eat them like this, then they eat the two dogs after. If you swallow hard then you should be okay. If you swallow weakly, then it doesn’t shoot down.

Michelle then obviously whooped me in a single hot dog eating time trial. I ate the hot dog in 60 seconds, while Michelle finished hers in only 11 seconds.
