Don’t worry bikini bottomers, your favorite sea sponge is alive and thriving, following rumors started by a fake tweet this weekend.
The tweet, appearing to come from the verified “Spongebob Squarepants” Twitter account, announced to the world that the beloved show of 19 years would be coming to a close as soon as March 1. The tweet also contained a picture of a Spongebob crying, as if the thought of a generation’s favorite show coming to an end wasn’t emotional enough.
Fans everywhere were both startled and confused about the out-of-nowhere decision to end the show. Some took the opportunity to celebrate the show for the mark it had left on their childhood, while skeptics, who refused to believe the end of the show was coming so soon, took to the official verified Spongebob page to see if the tweet had indeed come from the source.
Obviously, the tweet has been proven false since Nickelodeon ordered 26 additional episodes last year, that would take the show through the remainder of 2018 while also renewing it for 2019.
This isn’t be the first time the Nickelodeon hit sparked rumors of a sudden ending.
It could all be a publicity stunt to jog older fan’s memories of the famous sponge, but ultimately, we’re just happy that we haven’t seen the last of Spongebob, Squidward, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs. Plus, it also gives us time to find out that pesky secret formula for ourselves.
