2018 is here and fans are ready to embrace one of the most mysterious and fascinating backstories that J.K. Rowling revealed over 10 years ago. Sadly, our favorite LGBT+ Hogwarts Headmaster is said to remain closeted longer than we expected.
Back in 2007, Rowling completely shocked fans when she admitted to always thinking “of Dumbledore as gay.” The news brought forward a lot of curiosity as to the Headmaster’s history. Rowling later revealed that Dumbledore had always been in love with childhood friend Gellert Grindelwald, who would later part ways with Dumbledore due to his interest in dark magic.
We’ve been waiting for 11 years to see such a tragic romance acknowledged in more than just verbal confirmation, and The Crimes of Grindelwald is seemingly a perfect opportunity for viewers to really meet the Headmaster.
But to the dismay of fans everywhere, Dumbledore will remain closeted in the Fantastic Beasts sequel. Director David Yates confirmed that the film has no plans of acknowledging the famous headmaster’s sexuality, at least not explicitly. Yates claims that he thought fans had already been aware of this.
But before all hope is lost for fans eagerly wanting a Dumbledore/Grindelwald romance, there is still a chance of the relationship being acknowledged in one of the other three installments of the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
“I can’t tell you everything I would like to say because this is obviously a five-part story so there’s lots to unpack in that relationship. You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man — he wasn’t always the sage. We’ll see him at that formative period of his life. As far as his sexuality is concerned, watch this space.” Rowling said, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Fingers crossed that Dumbledore gets the liberated appearance he deserves. We are more than ready.
