Possibly the most famous groundhog on earth, Punxsutawney Phil, saw his shadow which means another six weeks of winter. Luckily, we have six facts about the famous rodent to get you through the final stretch of the cold weather.

  1. If you thought pronouncing Punxsutawney Phil was difficult, try saying his full name three times fast. Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators and Weather Prophet Extraordinary.
  2. Punxsutawney Phil doesn’t spend the whole year in the ground. His home throughout the year is in the Punxsutawney Library. On Groundhog Day, he relaxes in his burrow until it’s time to make his yearly prediction.
  3. Punxsutawney Phil is the only official groundhog weather predictor since the first Groundhog Day ceremony at Gobbler’s Knob 1887.
  4. The very first Punxsutawney Phil didn’t exactly get a second ceremony. In fact, he was served for lunch. Yes, the famous groundhog used to be eaten after his weather prediction was cast. It wasn’t until 1913 that Punxsutawney stopped being served on a platter after doing his job.
  5. The famous groundhog likes to drink up. According to the Groundhog Club, Punxsutawney Phil threatened to add a whopping 60 weeks of winter during the prohibition days if he didn’t get alcohol.
  6. Punxsutawney Phil is no bachelor. In fact he’s been married multiple times. Luckily for him, his wives are always named Phyllis
