PHOENIX – Longtime rapper, singer, songwriter, dancer and record producer Missy Elliott, will finally be honored at the MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 26.
Missy first came onto the rap scene back in 1997 with hits like “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” and “Sock It 2 Me” off her debut album which defined her sound in genres like rap and R&B and set her apart from the pack.
The Virginia native has continually pushed boundaries in the music industry by defying stereotypes through creating and reshaping rap and R&B into a sound that is only hers and hers alone. There’s no wonder her ‘Supafriends’(fans) have been questioning why this recognition is a long time coming.
Missy is set to perform for the first time in 16 years at the awards show and will be the first ever, female rapper to win the prestigious Video Vanguard. I know I won’t be the only fan tuning in to see Missy “Get her Freak On,” and frankly, I cannot wait.
It’s time this iconic legend is recognized for all the groundbreaking and influential songs and videos she’s created in her 20+ year career. Let’s hope her performance will look something similar to this…
