PHOENIX – ‘Riverdale‘ is gearing up to premiere its fourth season this Fall, and the first episode will be an emotional tearjerker, according to show creator, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

In effort to pay tribute to Luke Perry’s ‘Fred Andrews,’ the season premiere will have special guest, Shannen Doherty make an appearance to honor her late friend. After meeting on set of ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ in the 80s, the two have built a friendship to last through the decades.

Doherty broke the news to fans during San Diego Comic-Con weekend via social media. According to Variety, Perry wanted Doherty to guest star on ‘Riverdale’ since season one.

“We really wanted to honor Luke, to honor Fred and we wanted it to be a standalone, really emotional, really focused on what this character meant to this group of people.”

Perry passed away at the age of 52 after suffering a “massive stroke” in March 2019.

The tribute episode premieres October 9.
