Austin Butler confirmed to play Elvis Presley in new Biopic

PHOENIX – In a new take on an old, timeless legend, Warner Bros. and director Baz Luhrmann have found their Elvis, 27-year-old Austin Butler.

Deadline confirmed the casting of Bulter as Presley in a statement on July 15. Tom Hanks has also been confirmed to play Colonel Tom Parker, Presley’s long-time manager.

Other stars who were up for the role include names such as Miles Teller (Divergent), Harry Styles (Dunkirk) and Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars). Though fans on Twitter raved about the similarities between Presley and Teller, he did not land the role. Seriously, do a quick search of the two. It is uncanny.

“I knew unequivocally that I had found someone who could embody the spirit of one of the world’s most iconic musical figures,” Luhrmann said about casting Butler in a statement to Deadline.

Butler is known for his role in Broadway revival, The Iceman’s Cometh, as Don Parritt alongside Denzel Washington and will appear in the upcoming film, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, later this month. The young actor has also been a part of numerous Disney roles and is currently dating actress Vanessa Hudgens.

The untitled movie is reported to follow Presley through his road to stardom while handling his relationship with his manager, Parker. It will begin production in Queensland, Australia later this year Deadline reports. We hope to see Butler rock those Elvis hips on screen!

Elvis Presley rose to stardom in the 1950s and is well-known for his hits such as “Heartbreak Hotel,” “All Shook Up” and “Jailhouse Rock.” The Rock ‘N’ Roll icon passed away in August 1977 from heart failure related to drug use.
