THE DOWNLOAD
Starfighters Arcade in Mesa, Ariz. has more than 130 vintage arcade games and more than 30 pinball machines. Past the Castlevania, and The Simpson's Pinball game is a back room holding a select number of games. In the mix one arcade that doesn't fit, because many people don't believe it ever existed. Steve Thomas, Owner of Starfighters Arcade, is currently holding the game Polybius, a solo shooter-style game based on shapes and numbers. Polybius has no design, standing as a tall black box with neon blue letters on the top with a single joystick. But behind its lack of eye-catching colors lies a gasp-worthy story. Polybius in itself is an urban legend. In 1981, the game mysteriously appeared at arcades specifically in Portland, Ore. Allegedly, if you played Polybius too long you'll experience loss of sleep, night terrors, and in one unconfirmed case, seizures. Eventually, rumors began about subliminal messages hidden within the game's design, and ties to the CIA as a method for mind control. Though unsubstantiated, the CIA connection shows up in the game's model number, 'MKULTRA-001.' 'MK ULTRA' was the CIA's mind control program that officially closed down operations in 1973.

WAIT ... THERE'S MORE
There are many YouTuber's with game theories looking to debunk the legend, and many believe the few pictures on the internet are fake. The game does exist, and you can test your brain power at Starfighters Arcade. Act quickly, because the game isn't expected to last much longer at the arcade, but may resurface somewhere in the Valley shortly.
