'Keyboard Cat' From Viral Video Dies

Gone but forever in our memes

Anyone who watched YouTube at it’s earliest stages remembers a little feline and his electric keyboard. Bento, better known as Keyboard Cat 2.0, coughed up his final hairball March 8 at the age of 9 and has now joined his predecessor to play the big cat keyboard in the sky.

The original keyboard cat, named Fatso, passed away in 1987, long before introducing the internet to one of its greatest past times -- cat videos. The video, shot in 1984 on a tape, made its way to YouTube in 2007, just a year after its conception. The video, which now holds over 50 million views, took the internet by storm, paving the way for a future generation of keyboard cats.

Which brings us to Bento, or Keyboard Cat 2.0. He took over the keyboard cat title in 2010. Bento starred in commercials and made countless web videos. After the death of his feline best friend, Bento's owner posted a compilation tribute to let the world know of the death of our favorite musical cat. After the tribute, the world took to Twitter to express their condolences to the family, and mourn the loss of one of our YouTube icons.

Rest easy Bento! We hope you’re still rocking that epic blue shirt, playing that big keyboard in the sky. You will not be forgotten.
